Controls Engineer

Kent - Salary circa £40,000

We are seeking an experienced Controls Engineer to work for a major science park in Kent.

Main Duties:

• To work across a broad range of controls systems to ensure the ongoing operation and visibility of the current Utilities infrastructure, including troubleshooting/fault finding and routine maintenance/inspection.
• Able, and willing, to identify the best solution to controls/automation issues, even if this involves changing the way a system operates in order to ensure that the best solution is implemented.
• Working closely with the operations and maintenance teams, identify opportunities where improvements to controls systems can result in more cost effective or robust operations. Scope these minor improvement works/projects and implement the improvements, incorporating any feedback from the wider team.
• To support the migration of legacy control systems onto new operating systems (including Unitronics, PLCs and other HMI systems), and the development of specifications for new controls equipment and systems from conception to implementation.
• Commission and snag new or modified control systems, ensuring that they are fit for purpose by testing and soliciting feedback from users.
• To support controls systems changes to facilitate Utilities rationalisation projects, ensuring that modified control systems meet the current requirements of the operation.
• To work within existing Safe Systems of Work.
• Understanding of the potential safety implications of modifications to control system, seeking advice from the wider team to ensure that any risks are adequately controlled by the control system or other means.
• Participation in energy saving projects.
• Keep abreast of control system developments in order to identify opportunities for the use of alternative technologies or techniques.
• Keep and maintain accurate operational records and prepare regular progress reports as/when needed.
• Experience of working with a range of SCADA and PLC systems.
• Production of Functional Specifications and/or formal control system strategy documents.
• Write code to meet the requirements of the individual plant/process/operating system.

Skills and Experience Required:

• Previous experience working as a Controls Engineer, ideally in an industrial or utilities environment
• Problem solving experience
• Ability to read electrical and mechanical drawings
• Strong communicator as they will have to work with a wide variety of clients.
• Good Understanding of a range of Control Systems, including coding
• Computer literate and familiar with relevant software packages.
• Thorough understanding of PLC systems
• Awareness of two or more of the following controls systems; Trend, TAC, Schneider, Honeywell, APACS Moore, Siemens, and/or PLC automation, with the ability to work through and understand the strategy and control systems.
• Production of functional specifications or strategy documentation
• Ability to work well within a multi-disciplinary team
• Knowledge of IT networks and comms protocols such as MODBUS
